“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change
the world; indeed, that is all that ever has.”

O2 MAX is pumped every day by Margaret Mead’s famous words as we focus our time, energy, and resources on the health, spirit and achievements of teens.

In Los Angeles, Karen Jashinsky was pursuing her MBA at USC’s Marshall School of Business. Her goal was to create a successful business of her own (as her parents had done with a restaurant in N.J. where she grew up). Her passion for fitness led her to earn certification as a personal trainer and before long she had established a group of regular clients, all adults. Many of them were anxious for their teens to become more active but there were really no gyms that welcomed them. The idea for O2 MAX was born— A fitness place teens could call their own!

As a USC student interested in entrepreneurship, Karen met the Editor of ENTREPRENEUR MAGAZINE who decided to chronicle Karen’s business idea in a series of articles called “Diary of a Startup.” Pam happened to read the article and the rest as they say is……. our story.
Add one more part California, awesome fitness trainer Shirley Brown and one more part N.Y., marketing maven Heather Kandawire….and the O2 MAX Management Team was good to go! (There are males in this story! Dave, Ross, Chad, Jon, Louis and countless others, male and female who have encouraged, brainstormed, burned the midnight oil to help shape O2 MAX).

Soon buzz about Karen’s efforts reached the mainstream fitness industry. Her visionary concept and pioneering efforts to create a fitness club exclusively for teens were recognized in January 2007 when she was named “one of the 25 young leaders in the fitness industry” by the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA).

And the number of those championing our cause continues to grow as O2 MAX reaches out to the fitness industry, health industry, members of the community in business and education to support the vision of a healthy ‘hub’ for teens. But no one has been more important to the vibrant spirit of O2 MAX than TEENS themselves. The voices of teens are key to everything we do. And we will follow their lead as their dynamic wants and needs change. But of course, some things at O2 MAX will never change—these include…our commitment to providing the tools, resources and professional expertise we believe all teens deserve in order to achieve their personal best.

Until we establish a permanent place in the culture, exclusively for
teens to discover their better selves, we won’t stop
